Hi Mika

Im a 3rd yr astrophysics and biology student, looking at my options for next year. I was just wondering how someone would get into science consulting?

thanks

I've wondered about Teal'c's staff weapon, if made in real life, how would you describe the burst of energy shooting out of the weapon? I've been wondering because that's a classic in science fiction

Here's a list from Wikipedia:

Here's a list from Pan-STARRS:

I haven't checked, but there is probably some overlap.

> That’s the basic concept! If you’re interested, I’ll go into more detail about what
> exactly is going on in all those crazy boards, walls, and notebooks of math.
Please do! I was studying for my PhD in math when I was diagnosed with brain cancer. And I've always been fascinated with cryptography. (Even though my specialty was topology and geometric group theory)

My networks have provided a nice set of panelists for this event (I love the Science & Entertainment Exchange!), but if PAX accepts the panel, please make sure to introduce yourself to me before/after/during the event. I'd love to chat more, especially because I'm more physical sciences than biomedical. And make sure to tag back with a link to the paper when it gets published (I have faith; it'll take a while, but neat papers always make it into the light of day eventually).

The past 24 hours have been incredibly productive, so I think I'm set for this event. I certainly will come calling if I do a similar future event either with more of an astro-focus, or in the southwest.

Side Note,
I just wrapped up a class paper that dealt with (in part) using TV (specifically House, M.D..) as a teaching vehicle for ethics (comparing it in part to literature and Sherlock Holmes.) You'll probably want a better panelist than me, but I'd be happy to pass along some of my sources. I'm polishing up the paper itself in an attempt to send it off to various journals, so I'm not sure I really want to hand that out.

But I might be able to do some sort of panelist or science consulting thing if there is room. Especially if there is gravitational physics involved. What exactly does this entail? What do I need to do?

I've never though "safe" is the right word, literature is never safe ;). Nor is any form of art really.
That being said, Science fiction (and Fantasy, but they are related) is truely the only place this discussion can happen in any meaningful fashion. If you want to craft a thought experiment you'd have to build a Fiction, a science fiction for the case of bioethics of new and emerging technology. Yet you'd be surprised how it can sometimes be dismissed by the academic elite. Perhaps that's where the value of it lies, in bypassing the ivory tower and bringing it straight to the masses. (Being a part of the ivory tower, I'm cautious about this though, you'd still want something/one guiding the discussion so it doesn't spin out of control).
As far as "extensions of real science" go, before I went on to study bioethics, I was a biochemist research assistant. (which I consider indispensible prework for this inquiry!) In my experience, so much of what we aspire too will become possible at some point. Obviously you point to a few obvious "gaffs" I believe you call them, but the bulk of it seems within reach (assuming of course our "reach" is considered over thousands of years). The history of science fiction only serves to validate this point in many respects.
Good luck to you on your panel, I hope it's accepted. Be sure to leave tons of time for Q&A, if I can make it (Yes, I'm coming to PAX) I'll want all of that time ;).
