Rangitoto, New Zealand is the youngest and largest volcano in the Auckland Volcanic Field. With a final eruption at least 600 years ago, the volcanic island is slowly weathering into soil. The rate of weathering is increased both by rainfall-watered plants and from human usage.

I’ve belatedly realized that Knitting Circles are the perfect tourist guide. New Zealand has a grand history of knitting, and I intend to poke around local yarn stores for possum-yarn, quill double-points, my share of the wool from the overwhelming number of sheep, and so on. To aid me on this quest, I’ll see just how many reviews I can add to the NZ section of KnitMap.

I’m heading to New Zealand for my birthday this year. I’ll be purchasing an unlimited rail pass, and seeing what I can see. So far, I think that will include a trip to an active volcano, exploring limestone caves, and a Busker’s festival. If you have any rail-accessible suggestions, let me know!
