Thesis
Posted on 08/21/2008 04:50 am by MikaUPDATE: I’m done! My thesis. I have prettier versions (with one grammar error corrected) that are more printer-friendly that I want to post locally, but my ftp client is currently sticking its tongue out at me so that will need to wait a few more days.
My research is on fluid dynamics of disasters. When we know a landslide is going to happen & it’s too big or expensive to prevent it, I figure out where it’s going to go, how deep & how fast it’ll be traveling once it gets there. This runout analysis allows planners and engineers to mitigate the risk (build the hospital somewhere different, put up debris retention structures, etc) so hopefully fewer people will die when the landslide happens. By me back-analyzing a whole lot of cases and making recommendations, it will be easier (cheaper!) for other professionals to forward-predict potential landslides.
