Surreal

Today I encountered a girl sitting on the stairs next to the commuter bus stop. Friendly and aware of how many people are lost at this time of year, I gave her an inquisitive look and smile. This started her talking. My conclusion? First-years are weird.

So, she wants to catch the bus, and she’s eating lunch while she’s waiting. Normal so far. She asks me if this is the stop; I explain that it is but she’d have better luck if she walked to the bus stop 10min away because this is just a little commuter loop and it doesn’t come very often. She thinks, decides she’d rather wait here. She tells me she’s going to Totem Park. …which is a 15min walk in the opposite direction. O-kaaay… I explain to her that this bus will pick her up & take her the wrong way, farther from Totem, and then stop at the previously-mentioned bus loop for 20 minutes before continuing on to Totem. She stops, thinks about waiting for a bus for up to another 20 minutes to catch it halfway around campus to then sit and wait at that stop for 20 minutes vs. just walking 15 min in the opposite direction. She chooses to sit there and wait.

And people wonder why there’s pills for restless leg syndrome when any sensible person would take a walk when they’re feeling jittery…
